Description

French Onion Pasta Salad is a creamy, comforting pasta dish made with sweet caramelized onions, tender farfalle, and a tangy herb dressing. Perfect for potlucks, meal prep, or an easy weeknight side.


Ingredients

  • 2 white onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 23 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3/4 lb farfalle pasta
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp chives, chopped
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over low heat. Add sliced onions and salt. Cook slowly, stirring every few minutes, until caramelized (about 45 minutes). Add garlic during the last minute.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and let cool.
  3. In a large bowl, mix sour cream, mayo, vinegar, parsley, chives, and soy sauce until smooth.
  4. Add cooled pasta to the dressing and toss to coat evenly.
  5. Stir in caramelized onions, reserving a small portion for garnish if desired.
  6. Top with extra onions, herbs, and black pepper. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

  • Take your time with the onions—low and slow gives the best flavor.
  • Add a splash of pasta water if the dressing feels too thick.
  • Tastes even better after chilling for a few hours.
