General Tso’s Chicken

Description

This slow cooker General Tso’s Chicken is tender, saucy, and better than takeout! Sweet, tangy, and just a little spicy, it’s an easy crock pot family dinner.


Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts, cubed

  • 1/2 cup cornstarch

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

  • 1/4 cup green onions, sliced

  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds

  • Cooked white rice (for serving)


Instructions

  1. Toss cubed chicken in cornstarch until lightly coated. Shake off excess.

  2. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown chicken on all sides, about 5–6 minutes. (Chicken does not need to be fully cooked yet.)

  3. Transfer browned chicken to the crock pot.

  4. In a bowl, whisk hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, water, and red pepper flakes. Pour over chicken.

  5. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or high for 2–3 hours until chicken is tender.

  6. Serve hot over white rice. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • For spicier chicken, add more crushed red pepper flakes or a drizzle of sriracha.

  • Add broccoli or bell peppers in the last 30 minutes for extra veggies.

  • To thicken sauce, whisk in a cornstarch slurry. For thinner sauce, add a splash of chicken broth.

  • Chicken thighs work just as well and stay extra juicy.
