In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it into crumbles.
Stir in the refried beans, chili powder, garlic powder, and salt. Cook for another 3 minutes to combine flavors.
Warm each corn tortilla slightly to make them pliable. Place a small amount of the beef mixture on one side of the tortilla.
Add half a slice of American cheese on top of the meat mixture. Fold the tortilla in half and press gently to seal.
In a deep skillet, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully place each taco in the oil and fry for about 2 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels. Immediately open the tacos slightly and add shredded lettuce and taco sauce.

Notes
For a spicier version, add jalapeños or hot sauce before serving. Baking instead of frying is a great alternative for a healthier version.
